Is the Official Harley Davidson® App worth the download space on your smartphone? This was the question that needed to be answered. After spending a couple weeks exploring the ins and outs of the app, it's safe to say there are some really nice concepts and features that will keep you entertained.
First of all, the app is free and anyone can download it, even if you don’t ride a Harley®. Signing up is quick and easy, and don’t worry, you won’t be receiving any spam emails and notifications with the minimal details you provide. After login, there is an option to add your particular model of Harley®. This is definitely worth doing, as it allows you to explore extra features in the app. For example - Say you own a Touring Model Harley®, the app will recognise that your bike is equipped with a Boom!™ Box system, and will suggest that you integrate the app with the system. (Obviously this is not mandatory).
Navigating through the app is quick and fluent. Some key features that I particularly liked was that you could save certain dealerships and book test rides. You can also check out Harley’s® latest model releases and apparel on offer.
By far the most impressive feature, and admittedly, where I spent most of my time was playing around with the Ride Planner. Much like Google Maps, riders set a start and finish point and are able to add in options like avoiding tolls, and highways. Where I see huge value in the app, is that it can locate charging stations for Harley Davidson’s® LiveWire™. Say you are planning a long weekend trip and need to plan ahead on where to recharge, the Ride Planner will become your best friend.
The app also gives you recommended rides in your area by the official H.O.G Group. My only gripe would be there's not enough suggested rides for my area, yet at least they’re there. So with the ride planner, you can record and plan a desired route, then download that particular route as a GPX file. Admittedly, this process is easier to complete via your computer, yet capable on your smartphone. Using the GPX file, you can share the route with friends. The process may take a few minutes to complete but it's a great addition.
Lastly, I’ll mention that you will need to manually change Distance Measurements from Imperial to Metric as soon as you login to the app. It's beyond me why the app doesn’t automatically change this, as it can tell that you are in Australia. Nonetheless, an easy and quick fix in the settings.
While the Official Harley Davidson® app isn’t bullet proof, it does present some worthwhile features. The Harley® app creates value through the unique additions like the Ride Planner and suggested H.O.G rides. To answer the original question addressed at the start, YES, the Official Harley Davidson® App is worth a download. Check it out today!
